Zarqa University, represented by Dr.
Mohammed Issa Mehawesh, Faculty of Arts, Department of English Language and
Translation, participated in the 2nd International Conference on Language,
Education and Culture, held at Medipol University, Turkey, from 27-29 June
2019, with a scientific paper entitled "Human Translation vs. Machine
Dr. Mehawesh pointed out that literary
translation is one of the most important ways to break the barriers between
languages. Its task is to transfer the cultural aspects and beliefs from one
nation to another. The translation of these works is not an easy task for
humans. Imagine what happens if they were given to the machines! The researcher
selected Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Palace Walk" to study the
differences between human and machine translation. This study aims at comparing
between the translations of human and machine as well as to investigate the
strategies used by both. Finally, the researcher highlighted the mistakes and
problems faced humans and Machines in translating cultural expressions from
Arabic to English.
The conference was held to discuss the most
important topics related to the science of translation and linguistics and
methods of teaching English language. The conference was a good opportunity to
discuss the latest developments in these fields and gave the participants
opportunities to discuss new theoretical and practical issues.
